It's finally here! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/elephant.gif)

Thanks to TopMedic's diligence and hardwork, we can now watch the 'Brain Drain' episode of the Doc Willie and Liza show online. Please point your browsers to this location:

http://mind.pinoy.md/tv

The show is divided into 7 segments for easy digestion.

Highlights:
- discussions on mandatory service
- EVAT explained
- resident's salaries
- much, much more!

Comments and suggestions are encouraged.

Please remember that there will be a 'Brain Drain' episode 2 on Feb. 17. Please use this opportunity to add questions so Doc Willie can ask them on that show.

Doc Willie and Liza, you may send the rest of the DVD's that you want published on the net. I think I am pretty much set with the process and I can do about 1 DVD per week. The "Sex and Impotence" DVD may take some time because the DVD freezes at the 15th minute. I'd like to try one more thing before I give up on it. Naiiyak na nga si cruzin kasi nabitin 'yung international fame niya (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_mrgreen.gif) .

Also, do you have promotional still photos of the show? I'd like to incorporate them in the final layout. Medyo obvious kasi pag-screenshots lang. Yun bang parang posing ni Mike Enriquez at Mel Tiangco (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) . The final layout will reflect that it's a TV show.

Di bale, cruzin. Pag-natapos ko ang "Sex and Impotence" episode mo, I will make the trailer a music video complete with slow-mo's, special effects, and "Simply Irresistible..." as music background (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol.gif) .

Thanks a million Topmedic, Mike, Longvestor. It's really wonderful how you all did it. We'd be very happy to pay for the costs of the internet space and your hardwork. Just let me know so we can sustain this...

Hi Topmedic. I'll wait for the Feb 17 Brain Drain/Medical Tourism episode before sending you the next batch of DVD's. Maybe 3-4 DVDs, with Cruzin in it. Sorry wala pa kaming screenshots but I'll try to look for one. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/au_revoir.gif)

Great show, Willie and Liza! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbup.gif) Ito talaga ang programang nagbibigay ng "SERBISYONG TOTOO". I like the way you ask questions and address issues ....spontaneous, direct and unbiased. Walang pinagtatakpan...walang kinikilingan. Keep it up! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/au_revoir.gif)

After checking the problem, it seems that www.youtube.com, where the video files are hosted, is down. I continually get connection time out errors even with direct access. Even traceroute queries time out.

We'll wait until youtube goes back live then I'll check the segments again.

Thanks Willie. Hanggang libre ang YouTube, libre 'yan (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) We are actually using their servers to store and play the videos, so the concern of space and bandwidth is no longer a concern. Anyway, there are tons of resources out there that don't require much expense, so don't worry about it. Yung time at effort, tulong ko na lang 'yan. I don't only enjoy and feel good about doing these videos, I also learn, so it's a benefit for me too.

There are tons of possibilities now that we have started publishing videos on the web. From publishing your show to preserving medical and scientific lectures (Mike and I talked about this). We can also publish the good things that Pinoy MD's do like medical missions as long as they're documented on video (VHS, DVD, webcam, or any format).

Sneak preview of the next episode is now available!

O, cruzin, maximum airtime ka dyan ha...

(Tip: To avoid opening of multiple windows, the clips open in a single window. Please close a video window before opening another. If you don't see a smaller window after you click the "Play video..." link, it may already be open and hiding behind your browser or opened applications. Check your taskbar.)

Hi Friends,

Thanks you for watching and helping out in our health show. This is really the show
of and for the medical profession.
Thanks Jennifer for your kind words. I'll try to push it to the limit on Feb 17 for brain drain issues without sounding disrespectful. Yung may laman na tanong.

Topmedic and Mike, you've done a wonderful and beautiful job. We hope more people can watch and help out in our advocacy to help doctors and patients.

More and more doctors and non-doctors are lining up to guest or guest co-host. One of our best guests, famous pediatrician and Asst. Medical Director Dra Cuayo Juico, posted her picture on RJTV in all the elevators of Manila Doctors Hospital for other consultants and patients to see. They're now aware and tuned in on RJTV. We really try our best to make it the best show possible every week.

Yesterday (absent uli si Cruzin) we asked the Phil Society of Endocrine and Metabolism President Dr Mirasol point blank on his stand on VCO, Charantia and other herbal products for diabetes. "Sir, give me a yes or a no. Let's educate and help our our confused patients."

God bless everyone (and hope to see you next week Cruzin!)

Questions for Feb 17:

1) Whatever happened to the results of the Medical Summit? I've not seen it in online newspapers or on the PMA website.

2) Do they know that residents in private hospitals are not considered employees? Most of them are either contractors or trainees. Thus, their compensations are not salaries but allowances, stipends or honorariums. What can they do about this?

3) We have a previous thread about scholars who had to pay back the school for the tuition subsidy. However, they are requested to serve even without proper compensation. This is concrete examples of the pitfalls of mandatory service for graduates of government-subsidized schools. How do they respond to this? Pipilitin ba natin mag-mandatory service kahit wala naman vacancies or budgets?

Will think of more pag-nakatulog na ako. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Di ba according to the PMA guest sa brain drain, ito ang dahilan kung bakit na-scrap ang mandatory rural service dahil walang budget even for allowance. How would they fund this BIG (as it would involve a lot of students) program?

Hi Mike, Tortuga and friends,

Straight answers:
1. The medical summit garnered poor media mileage. A big chunk of the report is not doable or not being done. For example, there is a plan for a media bureau to improve the image of the medical profession. But without the budget or the person to do this, they will have to rely on unstable guesting from other TV shows. So far I have not seen brain drain discussed in other shows with the PMA.
Kaya nga di ko na sila iniintay. We'll do the TV shows ourselves not only for the PMA but for other societies and other credible doctor groups. Lilibre na namin sila. No debate. No budget issues.
Maybe they are lobbying informally with politicians, I will ask the status of this...

2. I asked PCS President Dr. Eduardo Gatchalian if he can be a spokesperson to lobby for the residents' salaries at least in Manila Doctors Hospital (dapat kasi kanya kanyang centers), he agreed with the plan but begged off probably because he saw the opposition from the hospital people and the work it entailed. He said the resident's group in private hospitals should start this. So far there is no group asking.

I already asked 3 residents if they are willing to ask for increase salary from their administration. All 3 said no. They would not jeopardize their training by offending the hospital administration. They might not even want other doctors to lobby for them. Takot sila. I believe if the residents are brave enough to ask openly and lobby a little, it can be done. Consultants can now support them. Maraming susuporta sa kanila. But it should start from them.

3. Mandatory service will probably not push through because of the lack of budget as Dr Melchor-Santos said. But time will tell if more hospitals close down due to lack of doctors... My feeling is no.
Regarding public hospitals, the LGUs should probably answer this.

Many of your questions on PMD should be directed to DoH but they don't want to guest. I asked Usec Jade Del Mundo to guest but he declined because he said he has a clinic on Friday. I also wrote Sec Duque before but he made me wait 1 month before finally declining my invitation. Maliit lang kasi tayong tao eh. That's the reality. That's OK but we'll keep plugging away with what we can.

Takot talaga ang mga Pinoy na residente. Kaya when I stood up for patient's rights, NO ONE stood with me for fear of retaliation. Kaya agree ako wholeheartedly na walang pag asa na ma-uplift ang state ng mga residente, health and patient care. The Pinoy MD in this country do not have the balls and the heart to fight for what they believe in..Kaya Vhorister, tara na!

I can't blame them, why should I risk something big for small rewards? I will do the same when I was a resident, when I am still meek and innocent.
I guess everybody already accepted the fact that when you go into residency you wont earn enough and the only reason your are there, is because you want to train and believing that in the end you will have a better life!!! from my point of view now this is wishful thinking...... after all we are just like a flock of sheep, even thou the fence was broken and the door of freedom is in sight we stay put and dont know what to do!!!!

When I was a 3rd year resident (2000), our residents' organization asked for salary increase. Tinaasan naman, from 1500 to 3000. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) Pero laging sinasabi na we were only trainees and not employees so hanggang dun na lang. I heard 11,000 na ngayon ang salary ng residents in that hospital.
