:bye: Hi guys!I need tips on what movies to see.My husband and I rarely have time to watch kaya we rely on reviews para our time is not wasted.Like we bought Open Wter CD and watched this couple who got left behind in a scuba diving expedition (I honestly don't know how can they be that stupid) try to fend for themselves for the ENTIRE WHOOOOLE movie.Princess Diaries 2 is not as good as the first one,She's chubbier here and di masyadong cute ang story line.Catwoman is so-so.13 going 30 is nakakaaliw besides the fact that Jen Gardner is really pretty(for me anyway).Got hold of We Were Soldiers and I bawled my eyes off.I still love Dragonheart,it made me cry too. ;) (sorry, baduy ako e)I still cannot relate to The Ring Series.Binili pa naman naming lahat.Sa totoo lang,di ako natakot. :angry:Kaya yang mga The Grudge,The Eye and the rest of the Japanese Horror movies di na namin inattempt panoorin. Has anyone seen Exorcist 2?Mas nakaktakot ang 1.I have not seen a sequel that I liked as much as the first, except for Charlies Angels and Final Destination(which still give me the creeps) Even American Pie 1 is better than the sequel.Shrek 1 is better than the 2nd,though I like the soundtrack here more.We love any movie with Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller in it.Try and catch Shark Tale, its hilarious.
Try and see Bullet Proof Monk,Fast and the Furious,The Rundown (ang galing ni Efren Reyes Jr dun)and Triple XXX. Kayo?

House of flying daggers- the story is set near the end of the Tang dynasty, police officers Jin (Takeshi Kaneshiro) and Leo ( Andy Lau ) plotted to destroy a revolutionary faction known as the House of the Flying Daggers by using Mei ( Zhang Ziyi ). Nice cinematography, fight scenes are likewise filled with special effects with good lighting. The sublplots are executed with style. My rating- 7 out of a perfect 10. The current DVD version released in PI was not yet dubbed in english and some of the English subtitles were translated loosely.

The efilmcritic.com has this to say: The romantic entanglements that are gradually revealed add a whole lot of dramatic gravity to the insane action-oriented antics, but let's make one thing clear: "House of Flying Daggers" is all about the action scenes. There are several, most involving swords, sticks, and (of course) daggers - and the sad, simple truth is that this flick puts most Hollywood Action Fare to shame. Hopefully the Asian filmmakers will continue to give us two or three new ones each year...until the American Movie Machine finally figures out why these movies are so globally successful.

"Beauty and the Beast" - yes, the Disney animated movie. the first animated movie nominated for best picture in the Oscars (1992). I honestly still think it should have won the award - and not "Silence of the Lambs". The new CG ones are life-like, but nothing beats the artistry of the old conventional animation. Especially the ballroom scene where Belle dances with the Beast. Observe the reflection of Belle's gown as she sashays to the tune of the theme song - pure perfection and beauty! I must've seen this scene hundreds of times, yet I always stop to watch. It always brings tears to my eyes.

I really liked Schindler's List but I can't get myself to watch it again. It's too raw. I even have difficulty seeing Ryan's Private... errr... Saving Private Ryan again. :D

One of the most memorable films I've watch is Empire of the Sun. I still like watching the Indiana Jones series over and over again.

One big cinephile here! :bye:

I love the Ring series but not the horror movies that Claire mentioned. I'm referring to The Lord of The Rings trilogy. :D

All-time faves include Vietnam War pics (Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Born on the 4th of July, etc.), the Godfather trilogy, epics like Braveheart, indie artfilm like Being John Malkovich, Oscar winners like Forrest Gump, etc. I like watching movies with Pacino, De Niro, Edward Norton, pre-addiction Robert Downey Jr., among others. These are just off the top of my head. I like Stiller's comedies and and all of Spielberg's films. I also have this obsession to watch anything with Drew Barrymore in it (this started with ET).

Since last week, I've been a regular at the European Film Festival here. I've watched 6 films so far. I enjoy watching Euro movies not only because I love learning languages, but more importantly because they depict realistic, day (or week)-in-the-life stories, with regular-looking blokes and ladies for actors. A nice change from formulaic Hollywood. Masyado nga lang maraming dialogue minsan, at kailangang mabilis ka magbasa ng subtitles.

These days, there's not much good movies to see. During summer, a lot of blockbusters are released but these are mostly loud, special effects-driven movies with shallow storylines that are only good for the 180 minutes you're watching them. OK na rin for relaxation. Sometimes you just want to escape from the humdrum of your daily life so you watch a movie to travel to a worry-free celluloid world. At least, there you get to meet Spider-Man. :)

On the local front, I've only enjoyed a handful of movies. Marilou Diaz-Abaya's Jose Rizal, Sa Pusod ng Dagat, and Bagong Buwan come to mind. The rest, I can't remember at the moment.

Miadaj, the ballroom sequence in Beauty and the Beast was aided by CGI animation.

thanks jojo for the info. it still does not dampen my love for this movie.

i was in fry's 2 wks ago (parang best buy, an electronics chain in the US), lo and behold, in their foreign movies section, they were selling some pinoy DVDs. i chose to buy sharon cuneta's "crying ladies". (more expensive than the usual, must've paid $24. baka kasi magalit si edu manzano pag bumili ng pirated copy ) hubby and i thought it was well made, and was funny. weird thing is, i've seen more filipino movies when i got here in the US than when i was in manila, including the VCDs my family brings me as pasalubong. the nice thing about having lived in NY and houston, i've had the chance to watch quality filipino movies in theaters. the latest i've seen in theater was "imelda", the documentary. also saw "mga munting tinig" and "jose rizal".

:P Hi guys!Just want to say we watched two movies last night and enjoyed them both.Try to get a copy of Feng sui ni Kris Aquino. We got curious on what the big hulaboo is regarding this movie and I must say, first time ko di nairita kay Kris. It's about a woman who got hold of a Bagwan which is a mirror supposed to be for goodluck used by the Chinese.Nway, anyone who has it will get really lucky and start to receive money and stuff but the downside is,deaths will ensue whenever you receive anything. This is one Filipino movie na nakakatakot nga.Next is Stepford wives.I thought it's going to be baduy but as the story unfolds ,nakakatuwa. The presence of Bette Midler made it funnier. :)

Basta gawa ni John Travolta... ok yun movie sa akin...
Ung last nya na movie, Ladder 49, is about a fireman who from a rookie, grew into a leader and eventually.....well, you have to see the movie... I might ruin the ending...
Problem lang kay John Travolta, parang di na sya bagay sa mga roles na pang-rank and file... Bagay sa kanya palagi ung sya ang Boss or Leader... kagaya na nga ng Ladder 49 at Swordfish...

:offtopic: Doc Wolverine...
Curious lang po...
Is LONE WOLF (shown on your frame everytime you log-in and write a message) a movie? If it is, ano po yung story and ano po yung clip na nakapost? Can't really decipher kung anu yun...
Sorry po for the ignorance...

We've also watched Feng Shui because my 6 year old daughter has been nagging me about it. I agree its one filipino movie that can really scare. IMHO, Vilma Santos would have made a better interpretation of the mom character who brought home the bagwan. Kris simply lacked the depth in terms of acting ability.
@ edelbau, Lone Wolf is a novel by Louis Joseph Vance. This is what they say in the Lone Wolf website: The Lone Wolf also known as Michael Lanyard didn't start out as a private eye, but as a criminal. All of Vance's books feature Lanyard as a charming sort of rogue, a European jewel thief with a soft spot for damsels in distress, trained in the criminal arts by the mysterious Irishman, Bourke. It's said The Lone Wolf was the inspiration for Leslie Chartis' The Saint. He certainly proved to be popular, be the thief, reformed thief, spy or private eye. His first appearance in film was in 1917, only three years after the first novel appeared. He remained a criminal right into the talkies, but by the third effort with sound, 1939's The Lone Wolf Spy Hunt, he was a reformed gentleman thief on the side of the good guys, and by the The Lone Wolf Meets a Lady (1940), he had acquired a valet, Jamison, whose chief job, it seemed, was to provide comic relief, and to become hopelessly entangled in the plots.
In 1948, after appearing in fourteen talkies, and perhaps as many as half a dozen silent films, The Lone Wolf moved to radio, and began a new career, with the cultured European jewel thief now an American private eye, even if the cops still didn't trust him. The radio series also proved successful enough to eventually spawn a television series, in 1954. The TV show had a rather schizophrenic hero, with actor Louis Hayward playing the character as a retired French gentleman by day, and the shadowy, wall-crawling Lone Wolf by night.
Another character with a similiar convoluted history is Boston Blackie, who coincidentally was also featured in Moonstone Books series of crime comic titles, released in 2002. Others in their "Moonstone Noir" line include , Johnny Dollar, Boston Blackie, and Jack Hagee, P.I. Seems you can't keep a good character down... but they're sure trying. In this latest incarnation, The Lone Wolf is a young babe who works alone for the most part.

I tend to go for the oldies and occasional foreign films. Best Years of Our Lives, All About Eve, Gentleman's Agreement, The Maltese Falcon (like it better thn Casablanca among Bogart's film), it Happened One night (Gable), Ben-Hur (like it better than 10 commandments), Hitchcock's films (like Vertigo the best), Bridge Over river kwai,MASH, Citizen Kane (Orson Welles-a bit overrated) cant remember all my faves.
For foreign, Spanish films of Almodovar (though they tend to be famale oriented) although my favorite Spanish film was Belle Epoque.
Saw a lot of Chinese films like Raise the Red Lantern (was it Gong Li- saw her in so many movies cant remember), Eat Drink Man Woman. Liked a Kurosawa (Japanese) movie like Ran (adaptation of King Lear) better than Rashomon. Can't appreciate French films as they go for too much symbolisms.
For tagalogs, I liked Batch 81 of Mike de Leon, Himala (Nora), some of vilma (like dekada 70 and Bata bata), Needs to watch crying ladies. Miadaj is right, its easier to watch filipino films in big cities in US.

Here's a soon to be released movie I will surely watch:

Based on a best selling novel by Dan Brown which centers on one of the greatest
mysteries of humankind, a 2000 year-old conspiracy, clues to which are
encoded in the paintings of Leonardo Da Vinci.
Ron Howard, who won an Oscar for A Beautiful Mind, will direct and has picked Tom Hanks as the man he wanted to play Professor Robert Langdon in this thriller.

I did get to see Feng Shui and I must admit it is a different Pinoy horror flick. Not like the Shake, Rattle, and Roll series (not really scary!)...

I like Ben Stiller films. Zoolander, Duplex, There's Something About Mary...I think they're funny.

Disney animations? Of course! My favorites are The Little Mermaid (must have seen it a dozen times) and Beauty and the Beast, Finding Nemo.

I like these, too: Schindler's List, The Shawshank Redemption, Something's Gotta Give, The Silence of the Lambs, LOTR trilogy, Star Wars series, How to Lose A Guy In 10 Days, A Beautiful Mind, Forrest Gump, Taking Lives, Dead Poets' Society, Good Will Hunting, Double Jeopardy, I am Sam, The Last Emperor...

Pinoy films: Bagong Buwan, Munting Tinig, Lino Brocka films

And of course, the greatest story ever told (and a true story at that!)...The Passion of the Christ. I've seen it once, but the message never ceases to awe me. It humbles me...

I'm resuscitating this old topic because I bought "House of Flying Daggers" on DVD, mainly based on wolverine's post (as well as Ebert and Roeper's pleadings that the movie-going public give this movie a chance now that it's out). It also helped that it was on sale. Pure visual and auditory poetry! This made me go out and rent "Hero", an earlier Yimou Zhang movie. Preferred by most reviewers for its deeper plot/theme (compared to the love story of Daggers), but somehow I enjoyed Daggers better, just for its artistry.

Now, can't wait for "Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith". This should make the arc complete. Even with the high technology of Star Wars 1 (horrible movie, btw) and 2, nothing beats the original (Star Wars 4-6). I still remember seeing #4 for the first time at the old QUAD theater in 1977. It is a classic!

Among Pinoy films, the most recent I've seen and liked was "Milan". Good acting, puts the true sentiments of a Pinoy OFW in the frontline (makabuluhan, as they'd say in my high school). To those living in the US, if there's a Fry's Electronic Store in your city, go visit their Foreign DVD Section. They have an amazing stock of Pinoy DVDs!

I'm glad you liked it mia.
For those who havent seen Hero, this film is about the birth of what we know now as China. At the height of China's Warring States period, the country was divided into seven kingdoms: Qin, Zhao, Han Wei, Yan, Chu and Qi. For years, the separate kingdoms fought ruthlessly for supremacy. As a result, the populace endured decades of death and suffering. The Kingdom of Qin was the most determined of all. The Qin King was obsessed with conquering all of China and becoming her first Emperor. He had long been the target of assassins throughout the other six states. Of all the would-be killers, none inspired as much fear as the three legendary assassins, Broken Sword, Flying Snow and Sky.

To anyone who defeated the three assassins, the King of Qin promised great power, mountains of gold and a private audience with the King himself. But defeating the killers is a near impossible task. For ten years no one came close to claiming the prize. So when the enigmatic county sheriff, Nameless, came to the palace bearing the legendary weapons of the slain assassins, the King was impatient to hear his story. Sitting in the palace, only ten paces from the King, Nameless told his extraordinary tale: For ten years, Nameless studied the way of the sword and resolved to challenge the three assassins. Using the secrets of swordsmanship; Nameless defeated the mighty Sky in a furious showdown. Following this initial victory, he destroyed the famed duo of Flying Snow and Broken Sword. This time using a weapon far more devastating than his sword - their extraordinary love for each other.

The King hang on every detail of this curious story. But then something most unexpected happened - the King has a different story to tell of how Nameless really came to sit there, face to face with the King! It appears that everything was not so simple. In the centre of the intrigue sits Nameless -a solitary ranger and the King of Qin - the ruler of the Kingdom, with only ten steps between them. Within those ten steps holds an earth-shattering tale of love, honour and duty, a story that moves beyond the reaches of history.

Nameless critical decision on those final moments reminded me of what Spock used to say: "The need of many, outweighs the need of the few".

Stars Jet Li as Nameless; Tony Leung Chiu-Wai as Broken Sword; Maggie Cheung Man-Yuk as Flying Snow; Dao Ming as King of Qin; and my ex... he he Zhang Ziyi as Moon

Galing ng Milan. I watched it back in Pangasinan with my wife. Nung nandito na ako sa US, pina-Fedex ko yan, with 'All My Life' ni Aga and Kristine. Nakuha ng Milan ang sentiments and situation ng maraming Pinoy abroad. Nung pinapanood ko yan, di ko iniisip na mangyayari sa akin yung ganung klaseng lungkot.

I am actually thinking of writing a screenplay about Pinoy MDs going abroad as RNs or for training and those who are left behind. I-su-submit ko sa Star Cinema pag natapos. ;)

jologs ka talaga Mike.... MIlan pala ha. What if gawa tayo Bethesda naman.. Anyway, on a serious note ...we were about to do a movie with Unitel Productions about young idealistic MDs and their problems...(a spin off from Give a Life). Didn't materialize because of the politics. May synopsis na ako na ginawa ng award winning screenwriters na si Sennedy Que and Adolf Alix. Gil Portes would direct. Unitel would donate the equipment kaya lang napulitika..Jericho was to play the lead .The title was When Angels Cry...Puwede pa din natin ituloy..what do you think?
